iPhones Now Eligible For Standard Mobile Insurance

Starting July 17, iPhone owners who sign a new wireless contract with AT&T or upgrade an existing contract may now sign up for the carrier's standard mobile insurance plan.

According to AT&T, the plan applies to any iPhone model (old and new) and covers "Lost, stolen, accidental damage and mechanical or electrical failure after the manufacturer's warranty period has expired." The plan will cost $4.99 a month, plus a per-claim deductible fee that varies between $50 and $125 depending on the handset model--just as it does for non-iPhone owners.

Writes MacRumors, this is good news for AT&T customers (or potential customers) who balked at paying the carrier's previously pricier coverage of $11.99 per month, with a $199 deductible. The Next Web argues that this plan was "100% not worth it," since Apple replaces "accidentally damaged iPhones for a flat $199 fee." However, Apple's warranty doesn't cover lost or stolen devices, so AT&T's newer, cheaper plan for iPhones should put worried customers' minds more at ease.

The specifics of the new offer are as follows, according to AT&T's mobile insurance page:

Malicious hackers have targeted Google’s social networking service, Google+, for the first time in a scam that involves fake invites to the service, Naked Security reports.
The fake invites are spreading through e-mail, and they look very similar to the actual invites to the service, down to the e-mail address which seems to be coming from a Google+ member.
However, if you click on a link in the message – which we definitely do not recommend – you’ll land at a site trying to send you penis enlargement products.
Scams such as this one are very common with major product launches; most recently, we’ve seen a similar phishing scheme involving Google Music invites. Whenever you receive an “invite” to a service, especially from a third party, be extra careful before clicking any links and make sure that the invite is really coming from a legitimate source.

Vodafone pays over $400 mn more to buy Essar's 33% stake

NEW DELHI: Revising the deal, UK-based Vodafone today agreed to pay over $400 million more to its Indian partner Essar for buying its 33 per cent stake in the joint venture Vodafone-Essar.

With this, Essar closed the deal to sell its 33 per cent stake at $5.46 billion as against $5 billion decided earlier.

Essar had held 22 per cent stake in the joint venture through its Mauritian arm and the remaining 11 per cent through Indian subsidiary.

This means that Vodafone would take a further hit of over $400 million to buy out Essar's stake.

"Under the agreements signed in Port Louis, Mauritius, Vodaofone has made a net payment of $3.32 billion, after deduction of withholding tax of $0.88 billion," Essar said in a statement.

Vodafone and Essar have paid the tax even as both the parties continue to believe that no tax is due on this transfer. It was viewed as prudent to deduct and pay withholding tax on a without prejudice basis and they would claim a refund after following due process.

Vodafone also withdrew its tax dispute petition in the Authority for Advanced Ruling (AAR).

With this the 22 per cent stake works out to be $4.2 billion as against $3.8 billion decided earlier. The shares have been transfered to Vodafone.

Similarly, the value for the 11 per cent stake held by Essar through Essar Communications Holdings Limited has now been revised to $1.26 billion compared to $1.20 billion decided earlier. The transfer of shares would be completed after obtaining all necessary approvals expectedly by February 15, 2012.

Commenting on the deal, which has given over $400 million dollars extra to Ruias, Essar Group Chairman Shashi Ruia said, "We were one of the early entrants in the telecom space in 1995 and we are really pleased that Vodafone-Essar has grown to become one of the premier telecom companies in the country with over 140 million subscribers."

BSNL subscribers to get coverage at Amarnath Yatra

"BSNL has provided mobile coverage on the entire route of Amarnath Yatra. Customers from any other state having BSNL or MTNL post-paid mobile connection with roaming facility on their phone and all BSNL mobile customers from Jammu and Kashmir will have almost continuous mobile service right up to the Holy Cave," an official release of BSNL issued here said.

"Both the routes of Baltaal and Pehalgam, including Sheshnag, Panchatarini and holy cave have complete coverage with BSNL mobile network," it said.

BSNL had set up mobile towers at base camps of Baltaal and Chandanwadi which would help Army , Para Military Forces, and 'Langar' organisers to make better arrangements for pilgrims.

Roaming of other states' prepaid mobile subscribers is not allowed in the state of J&K.

BSNL has made special arrangements at base camps to provide prepaid mobile connections for pilgrims.

In an attempt to serve more than 3 lakh pilgrims who visit Amarnath Yatra in the state of Jammu and Kashmir, India’s National telecom backbone Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) today announced the launch of a special Prepaid pack dubbed as ‘Yatra SIM’ for Amarnath Yatris to facilitate their communication during the holy pilgrimage.

BSNL’s Amarnath ‘Yatra SIM’ (Prepaid Pack) comes for Rs.200 (SIM + FRC + Top-Up) along with talk time worth Rs.160 and Pay Per Second tariff i.e. 1 Paisa/Second for All Local/STD Calls to any network across India.

This Prepaid Pack will be valid for 15 days from the date of activation due to special security terms and conditions in the state of Jammu and Kashmir.

According to the BSNL’s statement, The Amarnath ‘Yatra SIM’ (Prepaid Pack) will be activated within 24 hours and can be obtained through any BSNL Counters at nearby location after providing relevant ‘Yatri Slip’, Address Proof and photo Identity proof.

Every year more than 3 lakh pilgrims visit Amarnath Yatra in the state of Jammu and Kashmir, for which the devotees have to trek to a height of 14,500 feet. BSNL is the only service provider which made GSM coverage available on the entire Yatra route.

Google+ Invite Process Shut Down Amid 'Insane Demand'

A day after Google unveiled its brand new social networking service Google+, the company decided to open up the invitation process late Wednesday afternoon to those lucky enough to have already been invited to participate in the service.


Previously, the keys to Google+ were only held by those select few who had been allowed in at launch. Thus, an invite was a prized commodity. I was one of those lucky few thanks to Harry McCracken over at Technologizer. Thus I got an early look at Google's new social network.

Google has stressed that Google+ is in its early stages. However, whatever Google was aiming for with its "field trial" must have been successful, because as everyone who was invited in to the service is now able to invite other people in.


Even the second wave of invitees was able to invite friends to join the service.


Better yet, those writing about the decision to open up the invitation process suddenly found themselves popular with readers: TechCrunch's MG Siegler wrote on his Google+ page on his own story that "I'm not sure any TechCrunch post has gotten comments at such a fast rate." BSNL Launches 1ps\min Offer

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) announced the launch of one New Special tariff Vouchers- 53 for cheapest own net local calling facility in Himachal Pradesh telecom circle.

BSNL’s STV-53 enable its subscribers to make all own network local calls just for 1 Paisa per Minute. The STV comes with the tariff validity of 7 days from the date of recharge and can be clubbed with for all 2G and 3G prepaid plans in Himachal Pradesh circle.

STV -53 will be available as a promotional offer to all 2G and 3G prepaid subscribers and valid up to 29 July 2011. BSNL is the 2nd largest GSM Mobile service operator in Himachal Pradesh telecom circle with 16,25,235 subscribers as per COAI Data as on April, 2011.

How To: Get Certificate To Sign and Install Unsigned S60 Apps Nokia

If you find files you want to install on your Nokia phone with the word “unsigned,” then you might want to read this. Here are sets of instructions to get a developer’s certificate to sign the unsigned apps and install on your Nokia S60 phone.

1. Register an account at OPDA. It’s in Chinese, but check the photo below to make it easier for you.

2. Apply for certificate here.

3. Enter your IMEI in the first form. You can get this by entering *#06# into your phone.
4. On the second box, enter last 9 numbers of your mobile number and place 13, 15 or 18 before them. EXAMPLE: If your phone number is +44 20 12345678, then you type 18012345678.
5. Press the submit button.
 6. After a few hours, check the My Certificates section for the cer and key files. You will need both to sign your apps.

7. Use SignSIS to sign the unsigned app using the Certificate and key files you just downloaded. You don’t need to enter anything for the key box.

8. That’s it! Your app is now signed and can be installed. From now on, you only need to do step 7 when you find more unsigned apps.

BSNL Launches 4G WIMAX Broadband

State-owned telecom operator Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) launches WiMAX the 4th Generation Wireless Broadband Service in Kochi city of Kerala telecom circle with speed up to 2 Mbps (core network speed 7 Mbps).

To empowered all 79 Key areas of Kochi including surrounding urban areas/towns like Nedumkandam, Kattapana, Kumili, Peermade, Munnar, Idukki, Adimaly and Suryanelli with High Speed Super Fast Wireless Internet connectivity, BSNL installed approx 200 WIMAX BTS towers in this region.

BSNL introduces a total of 7 tariff plans out of which 3 plans are for limited use and 4 plans are offered for Unlimited use of Wireless Broadband with speed ranging from 512 Kbps to 2 Mbps. Fixed monthly charges vary from Rs. 220 per month to Rs.750 per month for plans having limited use with regard to download/upload of data. Fixed monthly charges vary from Rs.750 (Home users) to Rs.7,000 per month for plans having unlimited download/upload.

Airtel launches mobile wallet service

MUMBAI: Bharti Airtel, India's largest telco by revenues and subscribers, launched its mobile wallet service Airtel Money in Delhi NCR on Wednesday, a company official said.

The service allows Airtel customers to make cashless payments from Rs 10 to Rs 5,000 a day for various services such as utility bills and movie tickets. The telco plans to raise the upper threshold to Rs 50,000 within two months, Airtel's m-commerce services chief operating officer Sriram Jagannathan told ET.

Bharti Airtel's scrip rose to 1.95% on BSE, closing at Rs 381.45 on Wednesday.

The service would be available to more than 8 million customers in Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad and Faridabad and will be rolled out in the country in a phased manner.
